Fashion Trends in 2023

Spring/summer 2023 trends were depicted on the runway before the fall of 2022. Here is a compilation of major clothing and style trends to adorn the wardrobe of fashion-conscious women this season.

Sheer Clothing: Sheer fabric that began last year will also be the defining fashion trend this year.

Utilitarian wear:  Cargo pants, denim, and comfortable silhouettes have started showing up on the shelves of stores.

Shimmer and shine: From metallic shades to liquid silver that can be worn on shirts, pants and sarong-like skirts.

Return of the Maxi: Maxi-skirts in denim or velvet whether ankle-length or floor-grazing will dominate this year.

Oversized: Gen-Z is stuffing the closet with everything extra large—blazers, jackets and shirts.

Cargo pockets: Be ready to see huge (cargo) pockets on pants, shirts, coats and even shorts.

Colour: Cobalt blue, all pink, different shades of green, elegant black or romantic ombré will be prominent.

Leggings: Styled with hefty sweaters and fashionable sneakers, faux-leather leggings continue to hold their own this year.

Indian ethnic wear trends

The year started with a bang for Indian ethnic fashion, thanks to the onset of the wedding season. Besides, there is a lot of experimenting with looks for all occasions, including work wear.

Lehenga:  The brides are spoilt for choices. Jacket and cape lehengas, anarkali lehengas with off-shoulder or full-sleeved blouses, cut-out or bustier cholis crafted in organza, tissue, velvet, silk and more. Embellished with sequins, mirror work, and embroidery and splashed in monochromatic, pastel, pink and multi-colour hues with ruffled, attached, or double-dupattas.

Sarees: Major influences prevailing this season are pivoted towards the regional touch and handicrafts such as block printing, embroidery and tie-and-dye. Light, translucent or see-through textures will be the flavour of the season. Teemed with quirky western-styled blouses like halters, off-shoulders, and even traditional ones like a kurta or staid full-sleeve tops, it juxtaposes modern with traditional. Shimmer and shine in sequinned sarees, floral embroidery or ombre shades, printed organza, tie and dye, and net with zari weaving will be lapped up this year.

Next, the fusion look continues with floor-length dresses and Indo-western outfits like the skirt-and-kurta, especially at weddings. That apart, the salwar-kameez, short kurta with sharara, and the dhoti-kurta combo will continue to occupy the pride of place.

Men:

For the most part, the trends in men’s wear are similar to women’s wear. For weddings, the bride and groom continue twinning, which is not going to go away in a hurry.

Ethnic wear: Bandhgala, straight kurtas, trendy sherwanis, and kurtas with jackets are the all-time favourites.

Western wear: In the era of work from home and travel, comfort is the buzzword and so, athleisure clothing and joggers will rule the roost. Additionally, there is a classic-fit dinner jacket, oversized blazer, polo shirts in vivid colours and crew neck sweatshirt. The retro look of the 80s and 90s returns and the accent is on relax, fashionable and functional.

Tips to invest in luxury fashion

  • It would be wise to look at a luxury investment article as timeless. Hence, when buying high-quality items look at the fabrics, designs and finishing which can be used multiple times. It is a value for money.
  • Ditch a luxury item if it is not to your liking. For instance, if you are not a shoe person, do not splurge on an expensive brand because it will lie unused in your closet. Hence, a waste of money.
  • Think of sustainable fashion. Know about luxury brands and buy better things. It is better to buy expensive and classic items that last longer instead of hoarding your wardrobe with cheap items.
  • Buy from well-known luxury designers, as they use high-quality fabrics. Therefore, research high-end brands and designers before you head to the store.
  • Pay heed to the ‘care instructions’ when purchasing luxury fashion to protect the items from any damage.
